Top 10 Wind Turbine Manufacturers in India in 2021 – Analysis

Wind: Larger turbines = lower cost of energy

Wind turbines harness the energy of moving air to generate electricity.

What is an onshore wind?

Onshore wind refers to turbines located on land. Onshore wind has the advantage of being one of the most affordable renewable energy sources. Generating electricity from onshore wind turbines typically costs around 7–9p per kWh which is around half the cost of offshore wind and a quarter of the costs of solar photovoltaic panels. Onshore wind generation is still slightly more expensive than fossil fuels (generating electricity from gas power plants currently costs between 4.1 and 7.5 p/kWh), but its price is expected to fall in the coming years.

What is an offshore wind?

Offshore turbines are located out at sea or in freshwater. Offshore wind power or offshore wind energy is the use of wind farms constructed in bodies of water, usually in the ocean, to harvest wind energy to generate electricity. The cost of offshore wind power has historically been higher than that of onshore wind generation, but costs have been decreasing rapidly in recent years to $78/MWh in 2019.

Objective of India of renewable energy capacity

India has set a target of installing 175 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity in the country by 2022, of which a majority is proposed to be met by solar (100 GW) and wind (60 GW) energy. India has set a target to reach a total wind capacity of 60 GW by 2022 and 140 GW by 2030, project installation have been decelerating recently, with only 2.3 GW installed in 2019, nearly half of the 4.1 GW installed in 2017.
